Verizon report highlights a year of networking dangerously

In 2008, Verizon tracked 90 confirmed breaches within its caseloads, involving a whopping 285 million compromised records - 99.9% of which were compromised from servers and applications.

Roughly 74% of these breaches came from outside sources, 20% from insiders, and 32% involved business partners. Approximately 64% of those breaches were the result of someone hacking directly into the network, using a variety of techniques ranging from bogus credentials to SQL injections made into seemingly harmless applications.

In its latest Data Breach Investigations Report, Verizon's forensics Business Risk Team for the first time examines a full year of nefarious hacking, unauthorized access and internal data corruptions that all add up to a serious and escalating problem for all businesses. Findings in the report emphasize the need for more effective network monitoring tools and safeguards, as well as increased diligence on the part of network managers and developers.
